Question: If you’re at home watching the wedding from your couch due to COVID, what are the rules? Should you also not watch from your couch? How dressed up should you get for a Zoom wedding?
Answer: This is of course new territory, so there are not hard rules. That said, my advice is to dress the same way you would if you are attending in person. The couple has presumably still worked hard to put together a lovely ceremony. They will be wearing special outfits and getting creative with the décor guests can see in the frame on the screen. Get into the spirit and help them make if festive by basing your attire on the setting, decorative elements and formality of the wedding. For example: Are they doing a summer, daytime garden wedding? Wear garden party attire, such as a floral dress or linen suit. If possible, use a somewhat plain fake Zoom background or situate yourself somewhere in the house where the background is as unobtrusive as possible, so that it’s not distracting to the guests who can see you on the screen. You’ll also want to make sure any visible areas are tidy. Otherwise, pour yourself a bubbly beverage and enjoy the “show”!
